Understand the Nervous System Mechanics Behind Fear of Skiing
For your first ski holiday or your fortieth, learn to notice what your nervous system is doing earlier, work out what you need and create more room to enjoy the holiday without faking being fine.
TAUGHT BY SARAH GILBERTSON BASI-QUALIFIED ALPINE & ADAPTIVE SKI INSTRUCTOR DIPLOMA IN THERAPEUTIC COACHING FOR WOMEN SPEAKER, NORTHERN SNOW SHOW
Look Forward to the Trip
Choose the runs you ski. Set the pace. Ask for what you need without making it a big deal.
Come home thinking: I love skiing.
SOUND FAMILIAR?
When Skiing Feels Daunting
You might feel nervous before you've even clipped into skis for the first time.
Or you may have skied for years and still feel your body tense the second somebody skis too close.
You may be quietly dreading the family holiday because you don't want to risk an injury or fear you could hold everybody up.
Treating all of this as a simple confidence issue misses what your nervous system may be doing under pressure.
Your confidence isn't lost or hiding.
Know what you need before pressure decides for you.
Once you understand what's happening, this is how you use it. Three steps, and it takes seconds once you know them.

HERE'S WHAT WILL HELP
Technique Isn’t the Whole Picture
Technique matters, but it's not the whole picture.
Fear, fatigue, menopause, returning after injury, surgery or illness, and pressure to keep up can all change how you breathe, move, focus and make decisions.
Treating every hesitation as a simple confidence issue misses the nervous system mechanics behind fear. Even well-meant encouragement can add urgency and pressure when what you need is a moment to notice what's happening and choose.
You don't need to make skiing feel calm. You need to stay present, think clearly and make choices whilst being in a mobilised and switched on state.

1
Nervous System Regulation 101 for Skiers
The nervous system mechanics behind fear. Regulation isn’t staying calm. It’s being able to mobilise when skiing demands it and settle again afterwards.
2
The Nervous System Is the Bridge
Why the ski day starts long before the first lift.
3
Interoception: Notice Your Own Nervous System Responses
Interoception is the sense that answers "how am I actually feeling right now". Learn to notice changes in breathing, muscle tension, effort and focus earlier, before pressure has decided for you.
4
Capacity: Why Some Days Feel Different
Capacity is how much you have available to meet what the day asks of you. It changes with sleep, travel, recovery and pain, even when your technique hasn't.
5
Regulation That Fits the Skier and the Moment
Why regulation isn’t just about being calm, and what it looks like for a skier. We look at what your nervous system is doing and how to gently retrain it so you can actually enjoy the holiday without faking being fine.

Six short videos. 75 minutes.
Plus a ten-minute guided interoception practice. An audio recording, in my voice, that you listen to at home. Interoception is the sense that answers "how am I actually feeling right now". Most of us have spent years learning to override it. It can be trained, and it gets easier with practice. It's the ground floor. Everything else starts there. Yours to keep and use as often as you like.
YOUR NEXT SKI WEEK

A Holiday on Your Terms
You can love your family, love the mountains and still quietly dread a ski holiday spent at the back of the group while everybody assumes you're fine.
Perhaps you’re worried about getting hurt or holding everybody up, and before you’ve had time to catch your breath or work out what you need, the group’s already halfway down the next run.
You may have handled the bookings, the kit and the administrative and emotional load for the whole family, only to find that your own enjoyment has become the lowest priority on the mountain.
This masterclass helps you notice what your nervous system is doing, work out what you need and find simple words to say it. The aim is not fearlessness. It's more information, more options and more of the holiday feeling like yours.
We don't build confidence by making your world smaller. We build capacity, so you have more choice.
What This Will and Won’t Do
This masterclass will not make every slope, snow condition or group dynamic easy, and it cannot change other people overnight. It will help you make sense of what your nervous system is doing, notice it earlier and have more options for what you do next.
If you are mainly looking for technical ski instruction, a lesson is the better spend.
TAUGHT BY SOMEONE WHO SPEAKS BOTH LANGUAGES
I'm Sarah Gilbertson, a BASI-qualified ski instructor and therapeutic coach for women.
At 40 I had back surgery. I was medically cleared to ski before I felt ready to trust my body at speed, and I've also navigated skiing through the challenge of perimenopause.
Ski instruction explained technique. Therapeutic coaching gave me the nervous system piece. Back surgery and perimenopause taught me what neither of them covered.
Bringing all three together changed how I understood skiing in midlife, and that's what I share here.
- BASI-qualified alpine and adaptive ski instructor
- 200-hour Diploma in Therapeutic Coaching for Women
- Eight years working in European resorts. Skiing since I was four.
"It gave me a different way to understand why I can be a capable skier, know what I need to do, and still freeze or overthink in certain situations, some days but not others."

QUESTIONS
Before you buy
This masterclass is educational and isn't technical ski instruction. Use any 'pause-and-notice' practices while stationary and in a safe place whether at home or skiing.
Do I need a particular level of ski experience?
No. This is for women preparing for a first ski holiday and for women who have skied many times but find that fear, fatigue, menopause, returning after injury, surgery or illness, or pressure from the group have become a barrier to enjoying skiing. It does not teach technique, and you do not need any previous knowledge of the nervous system.
Is this about calming down or thinking positively?
No. Skiing needs you switched on. The aim is to stay present, think clearly and make your own choices while your system is activated, then settle again afterwards.
How is this different from a ski lesson?
A ski lesson works on technique. This masterclass explains how fear, fatigue, pain or pressure can change the way you breathe, move, focus and make decisions. The two work alongside each other.
Will I have something practical to use on the mountain?
Yes. Listen → Respond → Choose is a practical framework for the top of a run, when everyone else is ready to go. The guided interoception practice helps you build the noticing that comes first. Use the audio at home or before you travel, not while skiing.
Is it suitable after injury or during menopause?
It can be useful in both situations, because it explains how recovery, sleep, symptoms and changing capacity can affect skiing. It doesn't replace rehabilitation or medical advice. Follow the guidance of your GP, surgeon, physiotherapist or rehabilitation team.
Does my family need to be involved?
No. This is for you. Nobody else has to join or agree to a process. The masterclass helps you work out what you need and includes a few simple ways to communicate it if and when you choose.
How do I access it?
You’ll receive an email straight after purchase. The six videos come to around 75 minutes in total, plus the ten-minute guided audio. Watch or listen on a phone, tablet or laptop, in one sitting or in shorter sections. There’s no schedule to follow and no expiry. Learn at your own pace, in your own time.
